At that moment the Haitian Revolution had outlasted the French Revolution which had been its inspiration. Their main reason to participate in this revolution was not just for liberty, but for. Between then and 1915 a succession of 20 rulers followed, 16 of whom were overthrown by revolution or were assassinated. The affranchis, most of them mulattoes, were sometimes slave owners themselves and aspired to the economic and social levels of the Europeans. Prelude to the Revolution: 1760 to 1789 The colony of Saint-Domingue, geographically roughly the same land mass that is today Haiti, was the richest colony in the West Indies and probably the richest colony in the history of the world. The fact that each social class had different desires for the future caused a lot of conflict. His biggest mistake in office was the execution of all French and white people on the island.
Once it became its own nation, Haiti got off to a rocky start because of its unfit leaders. One such uprising did take place. These laws upset the colonists, and they felt threatened. The wanting social equality , freedom , liberty and pride. However, the free persons of color were a different matter all together.
The cause of the Haitian Revolution was the inherent cruelty of slavery and the desire for Haitian blacks and multi-racial people to be treated with respect and decency. This aggressive behavior led other countries to stay away from forming relations with Haiti. The next class of people consisted of multi-racial people. Next came the slaves who, in Haiti suffered under some of the harshest treatment found in the Caribbean. Due to large amount of plantations, the trade of slaves increased drastically and constantly.
The effects of the First World War on the Russian army. The owners tried to keep slaves of the same tribes apart; they forbade any meetings of slaves at all; they tied slaves rigorously to their own plantations, brutally punished the slightest manifestation of non-cooperation and employed huge teams of harsh overseers. Then there were the free Mulattoes, who straddled a very tenuous position in Haitian society. They worked from sun up to sun down in the difficult climate of Saint-Domingue. One plot involved the poisoning of masters. The western part of the island, Hispanola, belonging to the Spanish and the Eastern portion, Saint Domingue belonging to the French. Since their wealth and position rested entirely on the slave economy they were united in support of slavery.
These threats heightened to a point so bad that it helped cause war, ww1. However, all three groups would be challenged by the enslaved black majority which was also influenced and inspired by events in France. On January 1, 1804, Dessalines declared the nation independent and renamed it Haiti. The American colonists won the Revolutionary war in 1781, and in 1783, the Americans and British signed the treaty of Paris In the final battle in 1781, the British surrendered an army of about 8,000 soldiers in Yorktown Virginia. They was known altogether as the grand Blancs.
All this mistreatment built the slaves of Haiti to form a strong resentment against their master, what made the situation even worse was the fact that Haiti was an island. The United States, Haiti's near neighbor, refused to recognize the new country. The slave revolt also known as a slave rebellion was a tactic used in the Haitian Revolution which was beneficial and got the slaves very far. Before the fighting ended 100,000 of the 500,000 blacks and 24,000 of the 40,000 whites were killed. At the war's conclusion, the island was divided in power between two of Dessalines' generals.
The Free Persons of Color There were approximately 30,000 free persons of color in 1789. Though successfully put down, it frightened American slave owners, leading to harsher treatment and closer control over slave life. What cause the Haitian revolution was that the people of Haiti was directly influenced by the french revolution, that was the main reason. The French merchants and crown set the prices for both imports and exports, and the prices were extraordinarily favorable to France and in no way competitive with world markets. However, the free people of color did not want to defeat the whites, they wanted to join them.
This commission contained Felicite Leger Sonthonax, a man who was to figure importantly in the future of The Haitian Revolution. The excesses of that contemptible treatment is the very reason why the Haitian Revolution was so successful: the treatment of slaves and Mulattoes in Haiti was so bad that it forced the most violent and ultimately, the most successful slave insurrection in history. It was virtually the same system as that which England had forced on its North American colonies and which finally sparked the independence movement in these colonies. A contraband trade grew up with the British in Jamaica and especially with British North America, and after its successful revolution, the United States. The colony itself was a very large and mountainous area, where deep valleys provided suitable hiding places for slaves who resisted by running away.
